"NON-SPILL" GEL FUELS - HOT STUFF, 13/05/2009
Safety is always a major concern with chafing fuels. DEG [wick] fuels have the advantage over gels. However, gels have the advantage over wick when it comes to heating performance. So the challenge has been to make gels safer; particularly to make them as near non-spill as possible so that not only unlit fuel would not spill should a burner be dropped, knocked over, slammed, inverted, shaken, etc. but - and far more importantly, of course - lighted fuel would not spill out; with all the consequences that might hold. Well, we've done it - with both our methanol and ethanol gels. Just see the photograph; 10 minutes before any sort of distortion or movement in the gel. Great for transport - no separation or breakdown of the gel - no matter how much agitation and rough handling. Legally, we cannot claim absolute "non-spill" or "safe", but we are still pretty pleased with ourselves for taking one big step.
